COCA-COLA AND YOUTH VOLUNTEERS SPREAD
EARTH HOUR MESSAGE TO 20,000 HOUSEHOLDS

SINGAPORE, 27th March 2010 – Coca-Cola is partnering ECO Singapore to spread the Earth Hour, Every Hour message to 20,000 households this year.

Coca-Cola Singapore is partnering the Environmental Challenge Organisation (ECO) Singapore to educate a targeted 20,000 households around the island on how to conserve energy. ECO is a non-profit orgnisation that provides youths with opportunities for community work to improve the environment.

Volunteers will leave behind recycled paper bookmarks, designed and produced by Coca-Cola Singapore, with useful tips on energy conservation. The ‘earth evangelists’ will cover HDB flats in Feng Shan, Hong Kah, schools such as Damai and Siglap Secondary Schools, and malls such as Ion Orchard and City Square Mall.

Antonio Del Rosario, General Manager of Coca-Cola Singapore and Malaysia said, “At The Coca-Cola Company, we believe that beyond the quality of our beverages, consumers judge us on the quality of our character and the way we treat our people, our communities and our planet.

“A sustainable brand – one that endures for another 124 years – must also be a socially responsible brand.”

Back in the Coca-Cola office, the public education work continues with staff members attending a Lunch and Learn session to understand some of the company’s and plant’s energy saving initiatives. As in the previous year, lights at the Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim office and the bottling facility will be switched off during Earth Hour.

In a bid to incorporate more energy and climate saving initiatives into its systems, Coca-Cola Singapore changed all 319 metal halide bulbs in the warehouse and loading bay of its Tuas plant to energy saving light bulbs last year. This switch was done because the energy saving light bulbs consume 173W less energy than metal halide bulbs, but produce the same brightness. This change in bulbs has resulted in total savings of 260,604kW a year.

In 2009, Coca-Cola Singapore received a 3R Distinction Award in recognition of its efforts to reduce packaging in its plastic bottles. The Company did this by lightweighting and shortening the neck closures of its plastic bottles. These initiatives have resulted in savings of 203 tons annually in packaging material.

Coca-Cola Singapore also significantly reduced its carbon footprint earlier this year when the Sales Team moved their office from Tuas to Toa Payoh, just a 10-minute drive from town. In the past, when the Sales Team used to meet daily in the Tuas office, the team had to travel to Tuas in the morning from different parts of Singapore, and then disperse after the meeting to their designated sales areas. The team allocated to the East used to spend more than 2 hours travelling to and from the office every day.

This shift in office has not only reduced the amount of time spent travelling, it has also significantly reduced the amount of harmful exhaust fumes discharged into the environment.

Other Coca-Cola markets participating in the Earth Hour in the Pacific region include Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. Some interesting activities include a lights out party in Indonesia and engaging power bloggers to promote Earth Hour and to write about energy conservation in South Korea.

The full list of Earth Hour activities happening around the region can be found in the appendix.

We invite interested members of the public to visit the Coca-Cola and ECO booth at the Esplanade Park from 5 – 8:30pm to learn more about energy conservation as well as make a pledge to save the earth.
